Searching for a domain
How the search works and what those status icons mean.
/domains is the search page. Type a name (with or without an extension), hit enter, and we check availability live against the registry.
What the search returns
- The exact match — if you typed
example.com, that's checked first. - Variations —
example.net,example.io,example.dev, and a curated extension list. - AI suggestions — if your input is a phrase or idea, NameLab generates creative alternatives. More on this in Using NameLab.
Status indicators
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ✓ Available | Free to register |
| 🛒 In cart | Already in your cart |
| ✗ Taken | Registered to someone else |
| ⏳ Pending | Recently expired; in the registrar's grace period |
| ! Premium | Available, but priced higher than the standard for that TLD |
TLD pricing
The row shows the registration price + the first-year renewal price.
For most TLDs these match. Some (especially new gTLDs like .app,
.dev) have a discounted first year.
If you want to see the full TLD price list before searching, visit /domains and scroll to All TLDs.
Premium domains
Some names are priced higher by the registry itself — a "premium" markup. We pass the price through; we don't take a cut on premiums. The premium price is what you'd pay at any registrar.
Bulk search
For multiple names, type them comma-separated:
example.com, example.net, example.dev. Results show in a grid;
add multiple to cart at once.
WHOIS lookup (no purchase)
If you just want to look up an existing domain, use /domains/whois. Free, no login. Shows registrant info (where public), registrar, expiry, status flags.
